There is an interesting history to the Cambodia gambling halls that sit just over the dividing line from neighboring Thailand, where gambling den gambling is against the law. Eight gambling halls are established in a relatively small area in the city of Poipet in Cambodia. This band of Cambodia gambling dens is in a perfect location, a 3 to four hour trip from Bangkok and Macao, the 2 most popular wagering locations in Asia. Cambodia casinos do a huge business with Thai workers and travelers from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a couple of Westerners. The amazing capital gained from the gambling halls ranges from seven and a half million dollars to more than 12.5 million dollars, and there are a couple of limitations constraints for casino ownership. Ownership is presumed to be largely Thai; however, financing sources are cryptic. The borders are formally open from 9:00 a.m. to 1700, and even though visas are allegedly necessary to cross, there are methods around this, as is true of most border crossings.

The first Cambodia gambling halls opened in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were required to close in the late nineties, leaving just one gambling den in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a docked boat casino, features 150 slot machines and 60 tables. The Naga casino never closes with 42 tables of mini-punto banco, 4 tables of chemin de fer, ten of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and a single table each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.

The initial gambling den in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in 1999 and the Golden Crown quickly opened. A total of one hundred and fifty slot machine games and 5 tables at the Golden Crown and one hundred and four slot machines and sixty eight tables at the Holiday Palace. The newer Holiday Palace Casino and Resort contains three hundred slots and seventy table games and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has one hundred and sixty six slot machine games and ninety six gaming tables, including 87 baccarat banque (the most popular game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Also, there is the Casino Tropicana, with 135 slots and sixty six of the familiar tables, as well as 1 table of Casino Stud Poker. One more of the 8 casinos in Poipet, also in a hotel, is the Princess Casino with one hundred and sixty six slot machine games and 97 table games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of an all-inclusive vacation and hotel building that contains numerous luxuries aside from the gambling den, which houses ten thousand sq.ft. of one hundred and thirty slots and eighty eight gaming tables.
